Breast Ultrasound

A breast ultrasound is one of the diagnostic tests used to see if you might have an abnormality in your breast. This procedure is performed if a lump is found during a physical exam or a mammogram or if you have unusual discharge from the breast. An ultrasound allows your doctor to determine if a lump is a cyst (filled with fluid), a fatty lump, a solid, noncancerous growth or cancerous.

Procedure

An ultrasound device sends sound waves into the body. The sound waves echo and return to the ultrasound probe to form an image of the area being examined. You will be asked to avoid wearing any deodorant on the day of your ultrasound and to avoid using lotion or powder on your breasts.

  • Before the procedure, you will undress from the waist up and wear a gown
  • While lying on your back, some gel is placed on the breast
  • The hand-held transducer is moved across the breast and directs the sound waves

Benefits

This noninvasive, simple and accurate procedure allows your doctor to see areas of the breast that can be difficult to view in a mammogram. A breast ultrasound is often used to check the results of a mammogram or when a mammogram can't be used. It is also sometimes used to guide the needle during a biopsy.
