Perianal Skin Disorders

Perianal skin disorders are conditions that cause symptoms including itching, bleeding, pain or discomfort on the skin around the anus and in the rectum. Many people experience these symptoms at some point in their lives. Only a physician can help determine the cause of the problem.

To determine a diagnosis, your physician will ask about your diet, medications taken, sexual history and bowel habits. He or she may also get a medical history to see if you have had skin problems, conditions like hemorrhoids or sexually transmitted diseases. Your physician will perform a physical examination and sometimes procedures like a rectal exam, scope or a barium enema.

Conditions your physician will look for include:

  • Pruritus ani - anal itching
  • Anal condyloma - anal warts
  • Paget's disease - an uncommon form of anal cancer
  • Squamous cell cancers - anal skin cancer
  • Sexually transmitted diseases - such as chlamydia, HPV or gonnorrhea

Treatment

The treatment for perianal skin disorders will vary depending upon the condition. Your physician will help determine which treatment is most effective.
